With national Covid rates approaching numbers not seen since the height of the pandemic, Pennsylvania’s Covid risk has been raised to “High” from “Medium” by Covid Act Now (CAN).  CAN is a non-profit organization of data scientists, health professionals, and Georgetown, Stanford, and Harvard Universities.  It issued the alert on Monday, June 19.

Metrics used by Covid Act Now to raised Pennsylvania’s risk level this week.

President Biden this week referred to the national Covid infection rates as “a pandemic for the unvaccinated,” referring to data showing over 99% of hospitalized patients are unvaccinated and more than 97% of all infections are in the unvaccinated population. CAN’s alert said the risk level for vaccinated Pennsylvanians is lower.

CAN raised Monroe County’s Risk Level from Medium to High on July 21.

According to CAN, Monroe County currently has the commonwealth’s fourth-highest average daily new cases per 100,000 residents. The county is currently seeing new cases of 5.6 per 100,000 residents each day.  Infected Covid patients in the county are currently passing the infection along to others at a rate of 1.21 new infections per patient. That is the 17th highest in the state according to CAN.  The county’s positivity rate – the percent of Covid tests coming back positive – is 4.4%, placing Monroe in the top ten statewide.  On Wednesday, July 21, CAN raised Monroe County’s risk level from “Medium” to “High”. The risk is much lower for vaccinated residents.

The county’s vaccination rate of 48% places us in the bottom half of the state’s 67 counties.  This means 52% of county residents remain susceptible to the virus.

According to the CDC’s Vaccine Finder, there are 50 locations within or near Monroe County to obtain a vaccine.  Vaccines are free, and some ride share services are even offering free rides to and from vaccine providers (to find out about free Lyft Vaccine Rides CLICK HERE, for Uber call (855) 921-0033).

In an interview reported yesterday by CNBC, White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said the most effective way to stop the growing rates of infection is by getting more people vaccinated.  “The easiest and best and most effective way that we can prevent the emergence of a new variant and crush the already existing delta variant is to get everyone vaccinated.”  In the U.S., 99.5% of Covid deaths are now among unvaccinated people, Fauci said, “that is a statistic that speaks for itself.”
