PMSD: News, Notes, & Kudos

Pocono Mountain High School West National Art Honor Society members Jeremy Lynn, Jeremiah Maldonado, Abegail Dela Cruz, Julia Rogers, and Kylie Olizarowicz have earned national recognition for their work.

The team participated in the Vans Custom Culture art competition in which high school students around the country design their own pair of Vans sneakers. Pocono Mountain West was one of 250 schools in the country selected to participate in this year’s competition. The 2021 contest is the 11th annual art competition since the company started the program in 2010.
Teams are provided with blank pairs of canvas sneakers to design two entries on the given theme. The 2021 themes are Hometown Pride and Head in the Clouds. The entries were judged by a panel, which selected 50 finalists.


The public was then asked to vote on their favorites from among the fifty schools submitting entries. Winners will be announced later this month. The Top 5 schools will receive prizes, including a Grand Prize of $50,000 for the school’s art program, custom codes for the design team and a visit from the Vans team to your school. Runner-up schools will receive $15,000 each.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2021-2022 term is underway! Children who will be five on or before September 1, 2021, are eligible to register for kindergarten. Parents of eligible children should contact the district’s central registration office (570-839-7121, ext. 40400) to schedule an appointment. Orientation dates will be August 9, 2021 – August 13, 2021.

Senior Awards The West HS Class of 2021 Senior Awards Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at 7 p.m. in the West HS Auditorium. The East HS Class of 2021 Senior Awards Night will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2021, at 6:30 p.m.

K-8 Summer School. This summer the PMSD is offering K-8 students a summer English and math program. The program will be conducted at the student’s elementary or junior high building from June 21 through July 26, Monday through Thursday, 8 am to Noon. District transportation will be provided. Building principals have more information.

PMSD Cyber Program Virtual ZOOM Open House. Parents considering a cyber program for the 2021-2022 school year, are invited to a Virtual ZOOM Open House with the district’s Cyber Program. Individual sessions for different grade levels are available on may 12 and 26th, see the district website for details and to sign up. An evening Open House for all K-12 students will also be held at 7 pm on Wednesday May 26th.

Pocono Mountain West junior Christian Fermin was named by the Pennsylvania sports writers to the Class 6A all-state boys basketball second team.

Pocono Mountain had several student artists take home prizes in this year’s Pocono Arts Council 27th Annual Juried Student Exhibition. Winners, all in the Junior Division, were, for 2D entries, Olivia Wilson, who took the 2nd Place award for “Parrot”, Colored Pencil, Swiftwater Intermediate, Teacher, Andrea Flaherty; the 3rd Place award went to Joseph Riviello, “Ant Infestation” Mixed Media, Grade 3, Swiftwater Elementary Center, Teacher, Shelly Grillo.

In the 3D Works category, Liliana Mann, won 1st Place honors for her work called “Winter Tree,” Grade 4, Clear Run Elementary Center, Teacher, Shelly Grillo. Honorable Mention went to Zaniya Ferguson, “Abstract Form,” Grade 6, Clear Run Elementary Center, Teacher, Shelly Grillo.
