PA Announces Additional Day Candidates Can File Nomination Petitions

Petitions Will Be Accepted 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 27

HARRISBURG — Acting Secretary of State Leigh M. Chapman announced yesterday that the nomination petition-filing location for state legislative candidates and state committee candidates will be open an additional day – from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2022.

“Due to the shortened petition-filing period this year, from March 18 to March 28, we wanted to offer these candidates an additional day over the weekend to file their initial nomination petitions as well as supplemental filings,” Secretary Chapman said. “Normally, candidate petitions are only accepted on weekdays.”

Nomination petition-filing is taking place in the Keystone Building, 400 North St., Harrisburg. On Sunday, March 27, candidates must enter the Keystone Building via the Forster Street entrance and proceed to the atrium for check-in.

Nomination petitions must be received at that filing location no later than the deadline of 5 p.m. on Monday, March 28, 2022. Candidates must be in line with their completed nomination petitions by 5 p.m. to file.

On March 16, 2022, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court (SCOPA) ordered that the Final Reapportionment Plan of the Pennsylvania Legislative Reapportionment Commission, filed on Feb. 4, 2022, has the force of law. The Court also modified the May 17 General Primary Election Calendar for seats in the General Assembly and for state party committees and set the nomination petition-filing period for these candidates from March 18 to March 28, 2022.

A March 2 SCOPA order aligned the period for state party committees to circulate and file nomination petition forms with the period set for candidates seeking seats in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The court aligned the period for local party committees to circulate and file nomination petition forms with the period set for candidates for congressional and statewide office. The nomination petition-filing period for congressional, statewide, and local party committee candidates began March 2 and ended March 15, 2022.

Candidates can create nomination petition forms online using the Department of State’s Candidate Survey webpage. Important election dates also can be found on the department’s website. Candidates should also actively monitor the Department of State’s website for additional information.
